The Nuts and Bolts of Romans Chapter 6
Romans 6: 8 - 14;
But if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him; For the death that he died, he died unto sin once: but the life that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Even so reckon ye also yourselves to be dead unto sin, but alive unto God in Christ Jesus. knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death no more hath dominion over him.
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey the lusts thereof: neither present your members unto sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves unto God, as alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under law, but under grace.
Romans chapter 6 is filled with potent teaching that will lead us into freedom in Christ. The nuts and bolts of being a disciple of Christ is found in reading, meditating and confessing these important verses of the Word of God.
I agree with Bob Buess when he says that a bold confession of the scriptures will drive the demonic forces far from you and put you over into victory in every area of your life.
Let's take verse 14, a profound statement that "sin shall not have dominion over you." This is the American Standard Version, other translations say "sin shall not be your master" Rotherham's says "sin shall not lord it over you." But if you will boldly confess this verse of scripture, as a believer you will discover your thinking change from the negative to the positive as your mind is being renewed to this biblical truth.
Proverbs says "as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he."
Remember the five finger grasp of the Word of God: hearing, reading, memorizing, meditating and applying. I like the five Derek Prince used even better: reading, studying, memorizing, meditating and confessing the Word of God. Apply these steps to these passages in Romans 6 and your time invested will bring great dividends towards living free in Christ.
Notes:
I appreciate the words of Ernest S. Williams in a letter written to Dr. P. C. Nelson and have included them here if you would like to read them. The point I would like to make is that our churches are filled with exhortations to live free, live holy, do better, etc... But what will really help people to succeed is the practical HOW TO live free! The how to, or practical application of the Word of God.
"The sanctified life comes upon a full surrender and my be lived by faith as one reckons himself to be dead indeed unto sin and alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:11). I feel that the weakness in our movement, when it comes to preaching sanctification, is that the doctrine is taught so vaguely that may fail to get sight of something definite which they may have in their own lives.
I believe the Bible teaches that sin shall not have dominion over us and that it is our privilege every moment to live victoriously as we reckon ourselves dead indeed unto sin but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
While we know that sanctification is progressive, I would like to see more emphasis put upon a present experience as we take our position in the Lord Jesus Christ."
